The Palm Beach County holiday pet care calendar: when to book, and why here it is earlier
Holiday plans in Palm Beach County run on a different clock than in most of the country. By the time families elsewhere start thinking about Thanksgiving, the neighborhood here has already refilled with people who left in May. If you are reading this in September, you are early. Early is the part that works.
Two calendars stack on top of each other
The county's planning profile counts 1,545,905 year-round residents and adds 158,876 more as seasonal population, a 10.3 percent bump. It is not spread evenly. Delray Beach adds 8,612 people on top of 77,409 (+11.1%), Boca Raton adds 11,384 on 108,891 (+10.5%), Boynton Beach 8,153 on 87,639 (+9.3%), West Palm Beach 8,692 on 138,075 (+6.3%). The county calculates that number from seasonal housing units and household size in the 2020 Census, so read it as the shape of the season rather than a headcount taken in December.
The airport shows the same curve in hard numbers. PBI handled 598,453 passengers in June 2025, 888,705 in December 2025, and 992,435 in March 2026. The peak month runs 65.8% above the low month, and December is already well up the slope. Seasonal residents generally begin arriving in October and keep coming through the New Year, which is also when the dry season settles in (the National Weather Service in Miami defines it as November through April, and its 2025 summary notes the change being felt by mid-November).
The local squeeze, then, is holiday travel landing on a population that has already grown.
The countdown, by county school dates
School District of Palm Beach County, 2026-2027:
Thanksgiving. The district closes the full week, November 23 through 27, 2026. The last school day is Friday, November 20, and students return Monday, November 30. That is nine straight days off, November 21 through 29. Thanksgiving Day itself is Thursday, November 26.
Winter. The last school day is Friday, December 18, 2026. Students return Tuesday, January 5, 2027, with January 4 a teacher work day. Seventeen days without school, December 19 through January 4. Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, and New Year's Day on Friday, January 1, so both holiday weeks end in a Friday-to-Sunday stretch. One caution: the district's key dates page lists Winter Break in two overlapping lines that disagree about December 22, so confirm the current calendar with the district if those employee dates matter to you.
Spring. March 22 through 26, 2027, if you are already looking past winter.
Working backward: if your trip touches November 21 to 29, settle it in early October. If it touches December 19 to January 4, settle it in early November. Deciding early costs nothing.

House sitting at your address keeps the dog in his own house on his own routine, with a person there overnight. If the anxiety shows up year-round and not only when you travel, private training is the other route.
We have a cat and will be gone from December 19. What does that look like?
Cat visits run 30 minutes, scheduled once or twice a day depending on medication, litter box, and how social the cat is.
Do prices change by city or during the holidays?
No. The same price list applies in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, West Palm Beach, Pompano Beach, and Deerfield Beach, and the holidays do not change it. Note that the last two cities sit in Broward County, so their school calendar differs from the Palm Beach County dates above.
Match the booking to the trip
Two shapes of trip, two shapes of care, all of it at your address.
Nobody home overnight. House sitting means a sitter stays at your house. It suits senior dogs, medication schedules, dogs who unravel when the routine breaks, and homes that should not sit dark for a week.
Someone is home part of the time, or you are gone for the day. Drop-in visits and dog walking both come in 30 and 60 minute lengths, and there is a pet taxi for a vet run or an airport-day errand. Every sitter goes through a background check, and the team averages 8 years of hands-on work with animals. It is a local crew, not a rotating list of strangers.
Gift certificates are the December move
Florida law is unusually clean on this. Under § 501.95(2)(a), Fla. Stat., a gift certificate sold in this state may not carry an expiration date, an expiration period, or any postsale charge or fee, and the statute names service charges, dormancy fees, account maintenance fees, and cash-out fees. The narrow exceptions cover charitable donations, employee incentive programs, loyalty awards nobody paid for, and certificates tied to a limited-duration event, none of which describes a certificate bought for a neighbor. Ours carry no expiration date.
The pre-trip checklist
Free meet and greet, scheduled while your calendar is still soft rather than the week you leave. Key or door code handed over at that visit and tested by the person who will actually use it. Vet name, address, and phone, plus written permission to treat and a spending ceiling you are comfortable with. Medication in original containers with dose, timing, and where the refill lives. Food measured out, with an extra week in the house. And the nearest overnight emergency clinic written down before you need it, not at 2 a.m.
